Full-Grain vs Top-Grain vs Suede vs Nubuck

Every hide has layers. The outer layer, the grain, is the strongest part. How much of it survives the tanning process decides what kind of leather you end up with.

Full-grain leather

This is the top layer left whole. You'll see pores, small scars and natural variation. Those aren't flaws. They're proof the surface wasn't sanded away. Full-grain breathes well and builds a rich patina. It's also the most expensive to source, because hides with fewer marks are limited.

Top-grain leather

Top-grain has had the very top sanded or buffed to even out the surface, then usually finished with a coating. It looks cleaner and more uniform. It's slightly less durable and ages less dramatically, but it resists stains better. For many buyers it's a smart middle ground.

Suede

Suede is made from the underside of the hide, which gives it a soft, napped feel. It's gentle and comfortable, but it soaks up water and stains easily and needs more careful care.

Nubuck

Nubuck is made from the outer grain, then lightly sanded to create a short, velvety surface. It's tougher than suede but still shows marks. Think of it as suede with more backbone.
