How to Care for a Leather Jacket: A Simple Routine
Share
A leather jacket is meant to change over time. Cared for properly, it softens and darkens beautifully. Left alone, it can dry out and crack at the creases. The difference is a few simple habits.
After every wear
- Wipe the shoulders, cuffs and collar with a soft, dry cloth.
- Empty the pockets, as keys and phones stretch the leather unevenly.
- If you wore it in the cold, let it come back to room temperature before hanging it away.
Cleaning
Brush off loose dust first. Spot-test any leather cleaner on a hidden patch, then clean in small circles with a barely damp cloth and wipe away any residue. Let the jacket dry naturally at room temperature, never with a hairdryer or radiator. Avoid household soaps and all-purpose cleaners, which strip the leather's natural oils.
Conditioning
Conditioner replaces natural oils and helps prevent cracking. As a guide, cow hide benefits from conditioning every two to three months, while softer sheepskin needs it far less often, roughly twice a year. Use a small amount, let it absorb, and buff off any excess.
Storage
Hang your jacket on a wide, contoured hanger, never a wire one. Use a breathable cotton garment bag rather than sealed plastic, and give it space in the wardrobe.
If it gets rained on
Blot, do not rub, any surface water. Hang the jacket away from direct heat and let it air-dry slowly. Once it is fully dry, apply a light layer of conditioner.
