B3 Shearling Bomber Jacket: History, Fit and How to Buy
Share
Few jackets have a backstory like the B-3. It was built to keep people alive at altitude, and that still shows in how it feels: heavy, warm, and a little bit serious.
A short history of the B-3
In the early 1930s, bomber crews flew in open or poorly heated aircraft at high altitude, where temperatures could drop far below freezing. The US Army Air Corps adopted the shearling-lined B-3 in the mid-1930s as a heavy-duty answer. Sheepskin was ideal because the wool traps heat and the leather outside blocks wind.
The jacket went on to serve through World War II, and after the war it moved into civilian life. Pilots, film stars and later the vintage crowd all picked it up, and it never really left.
Best Fit for warmth in cold freezy winter to keep your health safe and it is specially prepared with sheep skin and extra padding with in folds.

What makes a B-3 a B-3
• A shearling body, with wool on the inside and leather outside.
• A large, wide collar you can turn up against the wind.
• A belted or adjustable waist.
• Roomy pockets.
• Heavy-duty zipper and hardware.
Details vary between makers, but those are the features people look for.
Why it's so warm
Sheepskin works two ways. The wool traps a layer of warm air against your body, and the leather outside blocks wind. You get insulation and protection in one piece, without bulky lining.
How a B-3 should fit
• Shoulders should sit at the edge of your shoulder bone.
• There should be room for a sweater, but not enough for a coat.
• Sleeves should reach your wrist, with the shearling cuff visible if it has one.
• The hem should land at or just below your belt.
It's a heavy jacket, so it will feel big the first time you put it on. That's normal.
How to buy one
• Check the shearling. It should be dense, even and soft, not patchy.
• Look at the leather side. Smooth, consistent color and finish.
• Feel the weight. Light usually means thin shearling.
• Check seams and zipper. Thick material needs strong stitching.
• Ask about the origin of the sheepskin.
Care in brief
Brush the wool, keep it dry, and store it on a wide hanger. Never put shearling in a washing machine. See our care guides for full steps.
