Why cheap leather jackets cost more in the long run

A $100 jacket that cracks in two years costs you $50 a year. A $400 jacket that lasts twenty costs $20. It's simple division, and it's why serious buyers think in cost-per-wear.

Where to save and where not to

•       Save on: brand names, extra pockets, decorative details.

•       Don't save on: the hide grade, the stitching, the zipper.

Warning signs of a bad deal

•       A big "70% off" on a jacket that was never really priced high.

•       No mention of leather grade or type.

•       Stock photos only.

•       No return policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is a $300 leather jacket good?

It can be, if it's real top-grain or full-grain with solid construction. Ask what the leather is.

Why are some leather jackets so expensive?

Brand, rare leather, heavier hides, and in some cases hand labor.

When should I buy a leather jacket to save money?

Late winter and end-of-season sales are common, but check quality before chasing a discount.

Your questions, answered

Why are real leather jackets expensive?

Three costs can't be shortcut. The hide itself — a jacket uses most of a full animal hide, and good hides are graded hard. The tanning, which turns that hide into leather over days to weeks of processing. And skilled hours: cutting, stitching and finishing a jacket by hand. A faux jacket skips all three — it's a plastic sheet — which is why it costs less and lasts a fraction as long.

How much tax do you pay on a leather jacket?

It depends on your country: VAT or sales tax, and sometimes import duty on top. At Holloway Hide there is nothing extra to pay — taxes and duties are prepaid by us, so the price you see is the price you pay, with free FedEx shipping worldwide.

Why is leather so expensive now?

Hides are a by-product of the food industry, so supply follows that market, not fashion demand. Tanning is also energy- and labour-intensive, and environmental standards have rightly raised the cost of doing it properly. Cheap leather usually means one of those steps was cut.
